"Haikus are easy
But sometimes they don't make sense
In Fitz's 9th Grade English Class, we were assigned the task of creating haiku. We were told to create four haiku for each season of the year. These basic guidelines were all of the information we were given to assist us in this project. After that, it was all on us; Sua Sponte like. There is almost an infinite spectrum of haiku topics that can be explored, you just need to know where to find them. Haiku cannot just simply be written; it cannot be given to you, but you must find it. And when you find that right haiku, the words flow onto the paper as if you are in conversation. And so we ventured outside of the pedantic world of school, and traveled into the limitless beauty of mother nature to find haiku.
At first, I could not find haiku. Was it somewhere way up in a tree hiding and laughing at me? After failing at finding haiku over and over again, I became frustrated. This seemed like a simple project that I was failing to understand. And then suddenly; that was it. I had found my first haiku! And where was it? In the gravel driveway of the Ward's house. Laying their flat and dark, mocking my every move, right before my eyes. It was my shadow. It went off like a lightbulb in my head, and just like that, I knew what I was going to write one of my haikus about. Although currently my mood was content and excited after discovering my shadow, before finding my first haiku, my mood was sad and frustrated. And that was the mood I was going to give my shadow; sad and abandoned. It was at that moment that I realized how to find haiku, it wasn't something that just came easy, it wasn't hiding from me, but it had been there the whole time. That was when I learned that finding haiku is easy once you learn how to sit back and observe the subtleties.
As fun as this haiku project was (once I figured it out), equally important was how it was a positive learning experience. The lesson I have learned through writing haiku's applies to life in so many different aspects. Writing haiku certainly didn't come easy to me. It took time before I figured out how finding and writing haiku works, but through time and resilience, I was able to figure it out.
So remember: observe, be resilient, and you will figure it out.
