This story showed me that no matter what the circumstances be, people will always make sacrifices to keep their love alive. The message that O. Henry is trying to convey is that love is the most powerful thing, more powerful than poverty and health. It will drive people to make sacrifices no matter any of the circumstances.
In "The Gift of the Magi," main Characters Della and Jim Dillingham are a young couple living in a small, cheap, New York City flat. The story takes place around Christmas time. Della and Jim are in poverty, and they are struggling to be able to purchase gifts for one another. Personally, I thought that "The Gift of the Magi" was slightly boring, but it carried a strong message. It made me feel lucky for living in the place I live in. Also, I felt sympathetic for Jim and Della, who had to give up one of their prized possessions to buy a gift. Above all; however, it made me realize the power of love.
"The Gift of the Magi" shows how it doesn't matter if you have money or not; and it doesn't matter what circumstances you live in, it is personality and kindheartedness that makes people love one another.
