WW Fenn Reflecction

Two years ago, in the cold of winter, lips chapped, knees shaking as if there had just been an earthquake; I delivered my WW Fenn piece in front of my class. I was in 6th grade, and as nervous as I was speaking in front of my class, it never occurred to me that there was a possibility that I would be selected to recite my poem, Caged Bird by Maya Angelou, in Robb Hall, in front of the entire school. When Miss Mott asked if I would consider doing so, I declined. I couldn’t imagine speaking in front of all Fenn and suggested that she choose another student from my class.

The following year I chose a speech that had been addressed to Mahatma Ghandi’s wife after his death. There was one clear winner in my class and he was asked to present in the semi finals in Robb Hall. But there was a tie for second place and another classmate and me.  Again, I opted out of presenting, and my two classmates went on to recite their poems in front of the school.

If given the opportunity, I would like to make a different choice; but in truth, I am still not sure if I would be comfortable speaking in front of all of Fenn.

I can't believe you chose not to go! I think you would be great. Nerves are one of this thing you just have to seal with--you can't escape them.

I can't imagine myself going to ASM. Really cool post.
